In 2022, the Foundation for Szeged (Szegedért Alapítvány) honoured citizens of the University of Szeged (SZTE) in all categories - on 15 March, the top prize was awarded to the world-famous biochemist Katalin Karikó, research professor at the University of Szeged, and the work of Prof. Dr. Lajos Kemény, dermatologist, Dr. Károly Szatmáry, astronomer and Mária Temesi, opera singer was also honoured.

These were the words of farewell Prof. Dr. Babik Barna received from his mother on leaving the parental home. His outstanding work has recently been recognised with the Officer’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit. On 15 March 2022, former and current citizens of the University of Szeged were also honoured: persons connected to the University received prestigious awards on the anniversary of the 1848-49 Revolution and War of Independence. We asked the Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy at the Albert Szent-Györgyi Health Center about his award.

Difficult or non-healing venous leg ulcers and diabetic leg ulcers can also benefit by a cell therapy procedure that doctors at the Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical Centre of University of Szeged for Department of Dermatology and Allergology are using in a clinical research project. After years of research and development, the therapy will be introduced in Hungary for the very first time through the University of Szeged.

The Keio Medical Science Prize has been awarded to Katalin Karikó "for the discovery of Specific RNA Modification Leading to mRNA Vaccine Development", as announced on 15 September 2021, Japan time. The researcher, who holds a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Szeged, will receive a certificate of merit, medal, and a monetary award of 10 million yen for her work.

It is with shock and sincere sorrow that we bid farewell to Professor Emeritus József Molnár, who passed away quietly at the age of 89.

Following a cornerstone-laying ceremony for SZTE’S Regional Cyclotron and Radiopharmaceutical Supply Center in April, another major milestone has been reached in one of the University of Szeged’s flagship strategic investments. On December 9, GE HealthCare announced that – for the first time worldwide – the MINItrace Magni cyclotron will be installed at the University of Szeged, marking a major advance for nuclear medicine and theranostic treatment in Hungary. At a special event held at the University’s main building, the significance and future impact of the pioneering device were outlined by Prof. Dr. László Rovó, Rector of the University of Szeged; Dr. Judit Fendler, Chancellor; Prof. Dr. László Pávics, Professor at the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and project leader; Dr. György Erőss, Regional Customer Relations Manager for Central and Eastern Europe at GE HealthCare Hungary Kft.; and Jan Wolber, Global Product Leader for GE HealthCare Digital.
