In memoriam Prof. Dr. Miklós Csanády

Miklós Csanády, esteemed clinical cardiologist and retired Professor of Cardiology, Professor Emeritus and former Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, a leading figure in the field of internal medicine and cardiology in Hungary, passed away on 6 July 2024. His memory will remain in our heart.

Professor Miklós Csanády can safely be called the ’father’ of cardiology in Szeged. As a young specialist, he was commissioned by Professor Miklós Julesz to set up an intensive care unit, but even at that time he was interested in cardiac diseases. In 1973, he was given the task of establishing the Department of Cardiology. He planned and developed the staff and equipment of the department in a purposeful and sytematic manner. He always kept his colleagues' professional development in mind, supported their study trips abroad and the advancement of their career. His colleagues could always count on his understanding, kindness and helpfulness.

Universally loved and respected by his patients and their families, Dr. Csanády was a beacon of compassion and expertise in the field of cardiology. His impact extended far beyond Szeged, as he became a trusted source for referrals both in the southern region of Hungary and beyond. As a result of his tireless work and diligence, all branches of cardiology in Szeged have earned a reputation for themselves.

He worked in all fields of cardiology, but echocardiography was his favourite until the very end. In 2000, he set up the Cardiovascular Centre, which was the first of its kind in the country at that time.

In addition to his work as a physician, his scientific work was also outstanding. He described many new pathologies, some of them for the first time. He devoted every minute of his life to cardiology and even after his retirement in 2002, he continued to contribute to the advancement of the specialty.

He passed away at the age of 87, shortly after the loss of his beloved wife, following a short but serious illness.

His legacy will continue in the countless students, residents and fellows that he taught over his long and outstanding career, as well as in the body of knowledge that he developed and published to share his detailed understanding of cardiology.
