ADVANCED SURGICAL SKILLS

Compulsory elective subject for 3rd-5th-year students of the Faculty of Medicine Credits: 2

Prerequisite of registration: Previous fulfillment of Basic Surgical Skills (or Surgical Techniques). The subject can be taken up and accomplished in the 5th, 7th and 9th semester only by students who have not completed Advanced Surgical Skills or Advanced Medical Skills.

The aim of the subject: teaching basic surgical techniques, invasive interventions and advanced surgical knowledge to medical students interested in different surgical specialties


Method: lectures (12 hours) + practices (12 hours); textbook


Evaluation: The prerequisites of the acknowledgement of the course are the attendance of the lectures, the fulfillment of the practices and at least passed (2) practical mark (the practical work of the students will be evaluated) and theoretical exam mark. The five grade evaluation mark is based on the written theoretical test exam. The practical knowledge of the students is evaluated on the practices.

Advanced Surgical Skills lectures (12 hours/semester) Form of examination: evaluation (5) Credits: 2.

 

Topics of lectures:

1. September 12 (Boros); Minor surgical procedures (recapitalization: sterility, surgical instrumentation, tasks and duties in the surgical theatre, administration) (2 hours)

2. September 19 (Boros); Incisions, excisions, biopsies, local anaesthesia (2 hours)

3. September 26 (Boros); Anastomoses (bowel, vessel, nerve). Minimally invasive techniques (2 hours)

4-5. October 3 (Kopniczky Zsolt); Conicotomy. Tacheostomy. Basics of abdominal surgery. Laparotomy. Open appendectomy. (4 hrs)

6. October 10 (Ábrahám Szabolcs); Fast track surgery. One-day surgery. Intraoperative endoscopy (2 hours)

Topics of practices:

1. Scrubbing. Basic knotting and suturing techniques (2 hours)

2. Minor Skin Procedures. Local anesthesia. Ellipse excision of skin. Removal of encapsulated structures (cysts, tunors). Incision of abscesses (2 hours)

3. Advanced suturing techniques Enterotomy. Intestinal and vessel anastomoses. (2 hours)

4. Minimally invasive surgery (2 hours)

5-6. Advanced forms of surgical hemostasis and suturing techniques on a large animal model. Tracheostomy. Laparotomy (4 hours)
