Latin Based Medical Terminology I

Course description:
The aim of the course is to evolve a basic language skill for general usage of scientific vocabulary in order to learn health sciences and work in the health-care system. Moreover, the students may acquire the basic medical terminology in connection with the Latin and the Greek languages. By completing the course, the students will study the basic concepts of Latin linguistics, as well as study different groups of medical terms and text types (medical reports, prescriptions, basic concepts of anatomy and pathophysiology, etc.). Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to translate and compose medical Latin texts and technical terms.

Course content:
1st week practice. General course description. Basic information about the typical issues of the language. Why do you have to study Latin? Phonological aspects of the language, writing and pronunciation. The general features of the Latin noun (number, case and gender). Course book: 1-11 pp.
2nd practice. Major rules of the declensions. The dictionary forms of the Latin nouns in all declensions. General features of different medical texts. General information about medical phrases containing Greek elements. Vocabulary about the structure of the human body and the body parts. Course book: 1-11 pp.
3rd week practice. Parallelly used Latin words and Greek elements in medical terminology. Translation of possessive phrases with the usage of dictionary forms (the usage of sing. nom. and sing. gen.).Vocabulary: skeletal system. Coursebook: 12-21 pp.
4th week practice. Typical endings of the dictionary forms and irregularities of the usages. Construction of possessive phrases in all declensions with multiple elements. Vocabulary: muscular system. Course book: 12-21 pp.
5th week practice. Irregularities of the declensions. The typical endings of the third declension. Usage of the pluralis nominativus in all declensions. Greek elements of diseases. Course book: 22-52 pp.
6th week practice. Usage of the pluralis genitivus in all declensions. Translating and constructing possessive phrase in plural with multiple elements. The special usage of the third declension. Summary and practicing for the midterm test. Anatomical words. Course book: 22-52 pp., 53-57 pp
7th week practice. Writing the midterm test with the course instructor
8th week practice. Basic information about the adjectives. Dictionary form and usage of the 3 ending adjectives. Translation and construction of adjective phrases with the usage of the agreement rule in singular. Vocabulary: Cardiovascular system (without the heart) Course book: 57-77 pp.
9th week practice. General information about the 2 ending adjectives. Irregularities of the 2 ending adjectives. Construction of phrases with 1 and 2 ending adjectives. Vocabulary: The respiratory system. Coursebook: 57-77 pp.
10th week practice. Practice of adjective phrases and combining them with possessive structures. Translating and constructing adjective phrases in plural. Coursebook: 57-77 pp.
11th week practice. Constructive complex phrases with the combination of adjective and possessive phrases. Coursebook: 77-83 pp.
12th week practice. Translational practices (diagnoses, processes, diseases and reports) Coursebook: 119-137 pp.
13th week practice. Content: Exercise and summary. Overview of the trial test for the final. Coursebook: 77-83 pp.
14th week practice. Final test.
