Spinal Cord Repair Group

Spinal Cord Repair group is currently established at Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, University of Szeged and focuses on the research of spinal cord injury.

Repair of the central nervous system after injury is one of the biggest challenges facing neuroscientists today. Injury to the spinal cord results in loss of both grey and white matter, i.e. produces a segmental spinal cord lesion as well as disconnects the brain and rostral spinal cord from the caudal parts of the cord. Since spinal cord injuries in humans and other mammals are not followed by the replacement of lost neurons or regrowth of injured axons, but they lead to permanent, incurable functional deficits. Many of these injuries affect the long ascending and descending tracts thus separating the lower spinal cord segments from the higher motor and sensory centres.

Research Interests:

– Investigating the role of inflammatory mechanisms in degeneration and regeneration in the injured spinal cord following stem cell treatment

– Investigating lesion-induced secretome based therapy in neuronal regeneration

Research Techniques:

-spinal cord injury modelling,

-immunohistochemistry,

-state-of-the-art microscopy (light/fluorescence/confocal/electron microcopy)
and image analysis (with 3DHistech),

-behavioral analysis of locomotor and sensory function,

-neuroanatomical tract tracing, cell culture (stem cells, iPSCs, neuronal/glial)
