Hungary’s largest medical school sports event, the Medical Cup, was held from April 9–11, 2026, and this year it was hosted by the University of Pécs.
During the three-day event, students from the faculties of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and health sciences competed against one another, while a strong sense of community was also built off the field.

The event, which boasts a tradition of more than fifty years—and was founded at the University of Szeged—once again brought together students from Semmelweis University, the universities of Debrecen, Szeged and the host institution, the University of Pécs.
The teams competed in five sports—basketball, handball, volleyball, indoor soccer and water polo—in both women’s and men’s categories. The results were often extremely close, and feelings in the grandstands ran high throughout the matches: the games were accompanied by drumbeats and constant cheering. In particularly close situations, it was clear just how much teamwork and concentration mattered—the event placed a serious strain on the participants, not only physically but mentally as well.

At the same time, the Medical Cup is never only about the results. The breaks between matches, the evening programs, and the spontaneous encounters are just as much part of the experience as the competition itself. Students from the different universities quickly found common ground, and by the end of the day, they were no longer opponents but members of a community.
In addition to the sports events, a cheerleading performance also added to the event’s atmosphere. The teams from the four universities not only prepared their own choreographies but also presented a joint performance, further strengthening the collaboration among the universities. The footage of the spectacular performances is available on YouTube.

The overall victory was claimed by Semmelweis University. The team from the University of Szeged (SZOTE) finished in third place overall with a consistent performance. The organizers will announce the detailed results at a later date.
The 2026 Medical Cup once again demonstrated why this event has been so successful for decades: students from a strong academic background, real-world competitive scenarios and a community atmosphere that makes it worth returning to every year.
