Budapest Public Transport

Getting to Szeged

By plane

Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport is easily accessible by flights from Europe (http://www.bud.hu/english). If you wish, we can organize you a transfer from the airport terminal to Szeged or you can order your own airport shuttle (https://zoldtranszfer.hu/). Alternatively, you can reach Ferihegy railway station from Terminal 2A or 2B by bus 200E (5th bus stop from the airport). The bus station is in the front of Terminal 2. Trains leave every hour and 13 minutes. The journey takes approx 2 hours and Szeged the last train station on the line. You can buy your ticket at the railway station from a vending machine with cash (HUF, card (MasterCard, Maestro, Visa,Visa Electron, American Express) or online (https://www.mavcsoport.hu/en).

By train

International trains arrive to Keleti pályaudvar (East Railway Station) in Budapest. You will need to change to Nyugati Pályaudvar (West Railway Station). The ride takes approximately 20 minutes.

Take Metro line 2 (red line) to Deák Tér (Deák Square) and change for Metro line 3 (blue line) to Nyugati Pályaudvar (West Railway Station). For this journey purchase one single ticket at the ticket office or vending machine.

Alternatively, you can take a taxi to Nyugati Pályaudvar. However, we do not recommend this option, since, unfortunately, taxi rides for tourists may be expensive in Budapest. L
InterCity trains leave every hour and 53 minutes to Szeged, the detailed schedule can be accessed on the website of the Hungarian National Railways (https://www.mavcsoport.hu/en). The journey takes approx. 2 hours and 20 minutes.
After your arrival in Szeged, tram line 1 or 2 can be taken to get to the city. Trams depart in the front of the main building of the Szeged Railway Station.

 

By car

Using the Hungarian highway system is the most convenient way, if you travel by car. Buying an electronic vignette before the use of the highways is mandatory. You can buy it at gas stations or online:http://www.hungary-vignette.eu/. Weekly (valid for 10 days) and monthly stickers are available for EUR 11.23 and EUR 18.04, respectively.
From Slovenia, take M70 – M7 – M0 – M5, from Croatia, take M7 – M0 – M5, from Austria, take M1 – M0 – M5. To approach Szeged, take Kijárat 166, Szeged-Nyugat (Exit 166, Szeged-West) of the highway M5 and follow route 55 straight to the downtown of Szeged.
It is mandatory to pay a parking fee at all designated car parks in the city between 8.00 am and 6.00 pm on weekdays. A detailed map of the parking zones can be found online (https://www.visitszeged.com/en/usefull-stuff/parking-in-szeged/).

Public transportation in Szeged

 

Szeged is a relatively small city and almost all departments of the University and most of the hotels are within walking distance. You can buy single tickets at the railway station and from ticket vending machines, which are valid for tram, bus and trolleybus lines. For using a bus, tram or trolley bus one needs to purchase a valid ticket. Tickets have to be validated on the vehicle. One ticket is valid for one journey only (single way on the same bus).
