Main research projects: Mitochondrial consequences of hypoxia, anoxia and sepsis; Effects of biological gases on the organelle; Antibiotic-induced mitochondrial response; The subcellular background of arthritis and IBD.

For in vitro analysis of mitochondrial function in various biological samples (e.g. isolated mitochondria, tissue homogenate, cells, tissue biopsy), High-Resolution FluoRespirometry (Oxygraph-2k, Oroboros Instruments, Innsbruck, Austria) is used in our laboratory.

Multiple substrate/ inhibitor titration protocols extend the information gained on various OXPHOS complexes in a single incubation protocol/procedure/process. O2k has an optimal chamber design and uses glass chambers and titanium stoppers avoiding oxygen-permeable materials used in other respirometry instruments, such as Perspex or Teflon-coated stirrers. Instrument also includes integrated Peltier-temperature control and an automatic titration-injection micropump.
